We would like
to
introduce you to the beautiful world of Sphynx. Hopingly my
site will give you a better understanding of
the Sphynx breed and the individual
personalities of each one of
them. They each have their own page to help show you their
beautiful features in the shows or at home. We
thrive for healthy and happy sphynx
to further the breed and our website is more than just a website to
sell
kittens. We have put alot of time and love into our site as a
show of our
love and their everyday lives as all sphynx should be
treated. To enjoy
our site you don't have to own a sphynx but is for any cat or animal
lover to
enjoy. Our site is constantly updated so feel free to come
back and see
what's new with us and our babies.
The personality
traits of a Sphynx is very outgoing and caring about their family, but
also vain enough to primp themselves regularly. They love to be held
and show affection and can be demanding at times. Their appearance is
nearly a hairless body, that has a velvet touch, but also can
feel like rubber. Large almond shaped
eyes, with full rounded ears and a long rat like tail. They are medium
size, with a look of a pot belly and wrinkled skin is always a plus,
especially between the ears and around the shoulders and muzzle. As far
as grooming a Sphynx. They require a bath when dirty as to much bathing
can cause to get to oily, since the lack of hair causes an oily
build-up on the skin, especially on the insides of the legs.
Oil of Olay Bath Wash or Dove Moisturizing Bath Wash are great to bathe
them, since they have no hair. Baby wipes come in
very handy on those days in between their baths and I prefer the type
with aloe, which is soothing to the skin. Once you hold a Sphynx and
feel the warmth from it's body, you will be spoiled for life. On a cold
night their under the covers with us and feels like a homemade
hot water bottle. To me a Sphynx is the Ferrari of the Cat
World.
Where Sphynx Come From.
In history
there has
been traces of naked cats. Mr. Shinick in New Mexico obtained
two cats, that were considered naked. From time to time
mutations took place leading to the birth of hairless kittens. The
beginning of today's Sphynx started in Ontario, Canada in 1966. A
domestic cat, Elizabeth, produced a hairless kitten, named Prune. These
two cats were acquired by Ridyadh Yania Bawa to be used in a breeding
program. Keese & Rita Tenhove joined the Bawas in this breeding
of hairless cats that were called Sphynx. Mr. Hugo Hernandez
imported the first Sphynx -cats from Canada into the
Netherlands. He worked together with a Mrs. Hannie
Nathans. Mr. Hugo Hernandez had two naked females, Punkie and
Poloma and one male, Bambi, found in Ontario that was used in the
Sphynx breeding program. Here are a few pictures of some of
the first sphynx to start the breed.

The Famous Mr
Bigglesworth

The
sphynx had became
well known through the famous sphynx that played in the Austin Powers
Movie. He has opened the eyes to the public about the unusual
breed of the sphynx. The sphynx has been popping up in
different TV shows as Friends, and different commercials as Stanley
Steamer and other ones have used this rare cat. A lot of
times a quick popularity can some times hurt a breed as people get into
it for the wrong reasons and that is to make a buck or to have the in
thing not knowing the caring or concern about the
breed. Proof of this is what happened to the
Dalmatian breed. 101 Dalmatians movie made the
Dalmatian dog in total demand to the public. Everyone wanted
a Dalmatians the following year. Many
Dalmatians were later found mistreated and in shelters due to the
popular trend and was swamped with backyard breeders breeding any two
Dalmatians without the knowledge of learning about the
breed. This is one thing that the true breeders of
this loving breed try to protect from happening.

Any guesses as to what kind of cat has paws that look like this?

That's Dalpat
Rambo's
Diamond Cutter's paw
kneading his mom's fingers. Cutter is a Sphynx,
a totally hairless breed. Looks like some part of a strange pink bat,
doesn't
it? I got to pet Cutter, and he feels like a hot water bottle made of
suede.
Here's Cameron
with a much more flattering photo of one of
Cutter's Sphynx buddies:

General
appearance
of the Sphynx
The main feature
of a Sphynx is its lack of
a fur coat! The head of this medium sized cat resembles that of a Rex
although there is no genetic relation. The nose is short and the color
of the body. The eyes are deep set and the shape of a lemon; the eye
color and the nose leather should reflect the color of the body. The
body is fine boned but muscular and has a barrel chest. The legs are
long and slender and have a bow legged appearance caused by the barrel
chest. The paws are neat and oval shaped with long toes. The tail is
long and tapering and hard to the touch. Although they are called
hairless they do have a covering of very fine hair all over their body
but they do not have any whiskers or eyelashes. Their skin temperature
is higher than that of normal coated cats. They are extremely warm and
soft to touch and have earned the name of 'suede hot water bottle'.
Unusually for a cat the Sphynx sweats over it's whole body surface and
needs to be regularly bathed or sponged to remove the oily
secretion. Some are more oilier than others.
